Down Memory Lane
Down Memory Lane is held from 10-12noon in the village hall every second Wednesday of the month throughout the year and is open to everyone who wishes to come and join in and share their memories of growing up in Lowick. Several of the participants have not met since they were at school together in the village so it is a great social occasion as well as a way of collecting oral history.
The coffee mornings started in 2017 after a very successful exhibition held in the village hall. The suggestion came from some local people who were keen to talk about growing up in Lowick. Initially it was held every two months but at the request of the participants we have held it monthly since 2018.
We go to the meeting with a topic in mind to talk about but inevitably, due to people’s memories being different, much discussion takes place (usually humorous) on different topics.
Everyone present has given their permission to have their memories noted and we are gradually building up a bank of booklets on different topics. So far we have: Shops from 1930’s onwards, Bookless Motors, The Pinfold, The English Presbyterian Church and The Locations of Martins Bank & Barclays Bank. We also have booklets/personal memories/reminiscences from Jim Barber, Frank Hall, Ronnie Howey, J R Sim, Dr Elliot, Hetha Bruce and the latest is from one of the group Arthur Cuthbert.
We held a very well attended exhibition in the hall in May 2024 and have also shared the information gathered at one of the Heritage Group monthly talks.
